Intro to Archery
Come learn basic introduction to archery!
with Laura L Shambaugh
Scholastic 3-D Archery has named Laura Shambaugh (former S3DA Michigan State Coordinator) as the new S3DA Texas State Coordinator. Laura was born and raised in Central Illinois, but currently resides in Sugar Land, Texas with her husband Jason, whom she has been married to for 18 years and has 5 beautiful children with. Laura and her family have been shooting competitive archery for some time now. Laura has a very busy schedule between shooting when she gets the chance, homeschooling, founding homeschooling co-ops, helping run two construction businesses, and starting and running different non-profits.
Laura is a S3DA Advanced Archery Instructor Trainer and USA Archery Level 3 Certifications. Laura Shambaugh became a part of S3DA because she saw the way it can touch children’s lives. S3DA was a natural addition to the Shambaugh family, as S3DA bridges the hunting and target archery communities, opening the door on both sides to experiences and opportunities that children may not have had before. Shambaugh saw that S3DA was the perfect fit sport-wise for homeschoolers. She feels that S3DA provides time for families to be together and is a sport that you will not outgrow. Watching the kids grow in archery and being able to help them become part of something that changes their lives is such a blessing.” Shambaugh contributes the S3DA success to passionate leadership and coaches that have helped the program grow exponentially across the country.

Nature Wine Walk: Intro to Riparian Function
with Sky Lewey, Nueces River Authority
What exactly is riparian? This course includes a talk to learn the basics of riparian function followed by a short walk to see what a functional riparian area looks like on the Frio River and how to identify activities that may hinder that function. We will discuss riparian plants from the Remarkable Riparian Field Guide and see how their wetland indicator status and stability ratings are useful in "seeing riparian function". Participants will gain a new appreciation for the benefits of good functional riparian condition.
Sky Jones-Lewey is the Resource Protection and Education Director with the Nueces River Authority. She is responsible for NRA’s education and resource protection activities throughout its 22 county jurisdiction. Ms. Jones-Lewey was born and raised on the banks of the Nueces River, as were her ancestors for five generations. She comes from a ranching background and is still involved in that endeavor.
She and her family live on the Open V Ranch northwest of Uvalde. She earned a BA in Chemistry and Environmental Science from Drury University in 1979. Since then she has worked in environmental engineering, regional government, international marketing, education and historic preservation.
Sky works to educate the public, especially the youth and landowners, about the natural value and function of our rivers and riparian systems and human activities that threaten them. In 2004 Sky received a national award from the Environmental Law Institute for her work in educating the public and the Texas legislature about the damage being done by off road vehicles recreating in the streambeds of the Nueces basin. In 2008, the Nueces River Authority’s Headwaters Stewardship education program, which Ms. Jones-Lewey is largely responsible for, received a Texas Environmental Excellence Award. Her work to educate Nueces landowners about riparian function is helping to create a model for possible statewide efforts.

Live Fire Cooking

with Jess Pryles, Hardcore Carnivore
I know what it’s like to be intimidated by cooking meat.
I used to be one of those people who stood in the meat department at the grocery store overwhelmed by the selection. I was too nervous to buy expensive meat because in case I messed it up and I didn’t understand the differences between the cuts. I loved the taste of meat, and wanted to cook it more often, I just didn’t know how…
So I set about changing all of that. I’ve spent years educating myself in the field of meat, and particularly beef. Cooking methods, which are the best tasting cheap cuts, which cuts are worth spending a little extra money on, what’s the difference between grass and grain fed, how does aging affect meat. I’ve visited ranches, slaughterhouses, butcher shops and gone through the experience of harvesting it myself. I’ve even attended courses at meat science University. Now, I’m proud to call myself a Hardcore Carnivore.
During my journey, I developed a special affinity for low’n’slow Texas BBQ, and helped spread the gospel Down Under by co-founding the Australasian Barbecue Alliance. Since undergoing my “meatducation”, I’ve done a bunch of other cool stuff, too; hosting meat-themed TV shows, judging at the biggest BBQ competition in the world, being a guest speaker at SXSW , Texas A&M Universityand the American Meat Science Association conference. I’m a proud brand ambassador for Gerber knives and spokesperson for Lone Star Beer, and have taught live fire cooking classes and demos across four different continents.
I’ve also developed my own line of unique meat seasonings called Hardcore Carnivore, released a cookbook and designed the JP signature edition smoker. Born and raised in Australia, I found my spiritual home in Austin, Texas, where I now reside.
You can find my original recipes, stories and articles here on the site – I hope they help you unleash your inner carnivore!

with Elm Creek Stables
Take an hour long guided trail ride through the hills of the Frio Canyon with Elm Creek Stables. No experience needed, these horses are very gentle.
There is a weight limit of 225lbs. for riders.
Excerpt: “In addition to creating memories for families that descend upon the Frio each summer, the Streibs are also doing their part to preserve what makes the area special. Like most horse operations across the state, Elm Creek endured drought over the last several years. While the Streibs were able to sustain their horses on supplemental feed, other owners resorted to releasing their animals to survive on their own. Beverly created the Frio Canyon Horse Rescue in 2014, and soon they started taking in neglected or abused horses and rehabilitating them for future adoption. Currently the program supports 30 horses and offers visitors several ways to interact with them: Not only can you groom some of the tamer animals, but you can also sponsor a specific horse and receive a picture and updates about its progress.”

Live your Legacy
By starting now to cultivate a life filled with passion, focus, compassion, community, and purposeful direction, we can each leave an enduring trail of light for those to whom we are connected. What mark do you want to leave on this world and the ones you love? What will be your legacy? In this two hour workshop, Lisa Hamlyn Field, owner of Lucky Star Art Camp in Hunt, Texas, will facilitate the exploration of your personal legacy and what it means to you. We will dig deep to create a vision of what we want our legacy to be. We’ll explore through list making and journaling, opening our minds and our hearts to delve deeper into our calling. Then we’ll create a visual map of our legacy to remind us daily of the things in life that keep us rooted, of the actions we need to take to help us grow, and what it is we are striving for in our every day life in order to leave behind the legacy we desire. Lisa will also share her personal experiences with creating community and how that has enriched her life and legacy in so many ways, as well as strategies for staying grounded and cultivating a network of support to keep your legacy alive. We hope you’ll walk away with a spark lit, ready to fully embrace, embody, and live out the legacy that was meant for you!

Lucky Star Art Camp (Hunt, Texas)
Lisa Hamlyn Field lives, works, and dreams on a ranch in Hunt, Texas. She’s a landscape designer, organic gardener, and event planner who loves to travel and spend time outside with her family. She takes every chance she gets to catch an outdoor concert, photograph her way through a farmer’s market, ride the waves, or spend time in the National Parks. She especially enjoys her morning ritual of waking up on the ranch to hot tea with honey, a green smoothie, driving her kids to school, and taking her beloved dogs on long ranch road walks. You can often find her at a table full of friends, enjoying good food and lively conversation. With a full-time job, a business, and five kids ranging in age from 10 to 26, there is never a dull moment and that suits her just fine! There is nothing Lisa loves more than gathering people and helping them to discover their true calling in life. Guiding people through the process of mapping out a plan to realize their dreams and fulfill their destiny is what feeds her. As the founder and director of Lucky Star Art Camp, she has truly found her calling. You can follow Lisa on Instagram @outsidelisa and @luckystarartcamp.
